The safe & appropriate use of Essential Oils can bring incredible benefits. From encouraging relaxed sleep to headache relief, Essential Oils are powerful wellness supports. However, there’s a dangerous byproduct to their popularity—a lack of education on safety and proper use. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant substances & you should treat them with care & caution.
Mistake #1 : Thinking You Need To Know EVERYTHING
There are over 150 types of Essential Oils but NO, you don't need to know every single one of them. Knowing & understanding a handful will do! If you are buying your Essential Oils via a MLM based company, please do your homework/research on the uses of Essential Oils, the benefits of Essential Oils, factors & consideration before using Essential Oils etc...ON YOUR OWN. Do not rely on the information that your up-lines are supplying you & most importantly, if you are into the MLM pyramid scheme, it would be really advisable to educate yourself with accurate & correct information about Essential Oils before you start pitching your sales, or else you will be spreading inaccurate or false information & end up harming someone. EDUCATION IS KEY!
Mistake #2 : Giving Wrong Advice
Due to lack of education on Essential Oils Safety & Proper Use, some individuals end up spreading inaccurate or false information which could potentially harm or hurt others. Essential Oils are sources of power plant-based chemical compounds, hence using them incorrectly will cause harm to a person's health. So if you are into the MLM pyramid scheme, please be careful & responsible with what you are sharing with your leads / potential sign-ups etc... While only a few specific Essential Oils are suitable for internal use, this doesn’t apply to all Essential Oils, nor do all situations call for internal use. EDUCATION IS KEY!
Mistake #3 - Disregarding Quality
Found a company that sells cheap Essential Oils? You might be getting fakes! Some of these companies are using synthetics and may contain hydrocarbon chemicals which will harm a person's health or even cause death! When you are buying Essential Oils, make sure they are organic, they have no additives & that they are also following the right farming principles to extract the Oil. EDUCATION IS KEY!
Mistake #4 : Using Photosensitive Essential Oils In The Sun
Photosensitive, or photo-toxic, Essential oils usually contain furocoumarins, which can cause severe burns & increase your skin cancer risk when your skin is exposed to UV light or sunlight. If you know you'll be in the sun, avoid them in products that are designed to stay on the skin, like body lotions or creams. A few examples of Photosensitive Essential Oils are Angelica Root, Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Cumin, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime. For DIY products, make sure that the use level in a leave-on-the skin product is within the recommended maximum dilution percentage level required by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA). If there are blends of photo-toxic Essential Oils in your leave-on-the skin products, reduce the percentage as needed. There are no restrictions for rinse-off products, so a shower gel or liquid body wash is not as risky. To learn more, you can download the standards from the IFRA website. Remember, EDUCATION IS KEY!
Mistake #5 : Using Essential Oils The Same Way
You can use Essential Oils in many ways BUT not all the same way. Each Application Method has its own precautions. Some Essential Oils can be applied directly to the skin, inhaled, or taken internally. While some Essential Oils can be take internally ONLY for a limited time, some Essential Oils should NEVER be take internally at all! Not forgetting to mention that some Essential Oils MUST be diluted with a Carrier Oil before application to the skin to avoid skin irritation.
Mistake #6 : Using Essential Oils Too Long
“Too much of anything isn't good for anyone.” - Ray Bradbury.
Typically, you are recommended to use diffuser-friendly Essential Oils for up to 8 hours only. For direct inhalation, you are advised to do so for only 5 minutes. Also, some Essential Oils are not recommended for long-term usage internally as well as you are stressing your liver & kidney functions over time.
Mistake #7 : Using Essential Oils The Same on Hoomans & Pets
NOT Recommended For Pets :
- Birch
- Clove
- Oregano
- Tea Tree
- Thyme
- Wintergreen
Safe For Dogs :
- Frankincense
- Lavender
- Helichrysum
Mistake #8 : Using Essential Oils The Same on Adults & Children
There are some Essential Oils that ain't suitable for usage on small kids (e.g. Lemongrass, Oregano) & some of the Essential Oils need to used differently in terms of dilution & placement of application (e.g. Eucalyptus must be further diluted for kids & cannot be used near the faces of babies & toddlers).
Mistake #9 : Using Essential Oils During Pregnancy
Some Essential Oils can stimulate Abortifacient Qualities, Contractions & Estrogen, hence they will be doing more harm than good.
BEST Essential Oils for Pregnancy:
- Ginger (constipation / morning sickness)
- Lavender (stretch marks)
- Lemon (fatigue)
- Orange (fatigue)
- Ylang Ylang (insomnia)
AVOID DURING PREGNANCY:
- Cinnamon

Mistake #10 : No Certificate / No Education / No Training in Essential Oils
In order to gain credibility & trust, you need to be EDUCATED in using Essential Oils. Not only you will be more confident, you will be doing yourself a big favor by not giving inaccurate or wrong advice / information on Essential Oils. So remember, EDUCATION IS KEY!
